Get Smart (Mailboxes)!
Posted on June 24th, 2009 No commentsSmart mailboxes are a usual feature of the Mail application. With a smart mailbox, you can specify that certain mail appear in that specific smart mailbox. The mail will still show up in your regular mailbox too and any chances you make to it in the smart mailbox are reflected in the regular mailbox as well.
Smart mailboxes can help you quickly identify incoming messages by sorting them for you. For example, I can set a smart mailbox which will automatically include all emails from Brian. Or, I can set up a smart email box which will include all messages with the word “server” in them, if I want to quickly identify server issues when they come in.
Setting up a smart mailbox is simple. In the Mail Application, go up to the bar at the top and click on “Mailboxes”. And select “New Smart Mailbox. Type in the criteria you want, and to add a second field, click on the “+” at the right and if you use multiple criteria, you can select if you want the smart mailbox to pull messages that match either both or either of those criteria, by selecting “any” or “all” at the top. So, for example, I could get my smart mailbox to contact any messages from Brian AND that are marked urgent. Or I could get my smart mailbox to take in all emails from both Jacob and Josh.
As I mentioned above briefly, smart mailboxes are different than folders in that they don’t sort your mail by pulling it out of the main mailbox entirely, but simply organizing it for you as it comes in. Smart mailboxes probably aren’t necessary for someone who does not get a lot of mail daily, but if you do, it is a quick way to identify important messages.
