The New MacBook Pro Product Line

At WWDC this week, Apple released the new MacBook Pros. They have released a 13’’ MacBook Pro, in addition to upgrades to the 15’’ and 17’’ models. They got rid of the aluminum unibody MacBook in favor of the 13’’ MacBook Pro. You can find all of the details on Apple’s website, but I will basically give you a run down about some of the changes. The 13’’ comes in two different models. The configuration is similar to the previous unibody MacBook, but the price has dropped $100 for both models, and there is a new 7-hour battery. The 13’’ MacBook Pro also has a Firewire 800 port, which the aluminum MacBook lacked and all of the new MacBook Pros have an SD card slot, for SD camera memory cards.
While there was a 15’’ MacBook Pro with the previous line, this new model offers cheaper pricing– starting at $1699 instead of $1999, the new SD card slot, and the 7-hour battery, like the 13’’ MacBook.
The 17’’ MacBook, which already came with an 8-hour battery, now is offered at cheaper pricing as well and comes with a 500GB Hard drive. Unlike the 13’’ and 15’’ models, the 17’’ model retained the ExpressCard/34 slot instead of replacing it with the SD card slot.
These upgrades and cheaper prices are pretty exciting overall, although I have heard some disappointment about the change from the SD card slot to the ExpressCard slot. I don’t think most of us use the ExpressCard slot on a regular basis, if ever. The return of the Firewire port to the 13’’ MacBook Pro is an exciting one. However, I think the new 7-hour battery is the most exciting. You can get through most of your workday on a 7-hour battery and you won’t even need a charge for a flight across the Atlantic!
