512finderleopard_fullThis week I’ll be informing you a bit about Finder. I’m sure you use your Finder daily and you likely already have a good idea of what it is. Finder allows you to look at the location of files and folders on your computer. When you click on “Macintosh HD” on your Desktop, you are opening up a new Finder Window and you can also do this when you are on your Desktop, by selecting “File” then “New Finder Window” at the top.

There are several different views that you can use when you have Finder open. You can view your files as icons, in a list, in columns or in Cover Flow. To change which one you use, select one of the buttons at the top left of window, just to the arrows. It just takes a second to change it and I will change it depending on what I am looking for. If I want to locate a picture, I typically use Cover Flow or view them as icons, but when I need to switch back and forth between a few folders, I will view them in columns.

Finder can also be used to get information on a file or a drive. On the side bar, you can select the device you want to know about, and it will tell you at the bottom of the finder window, how many files are on that drive and how much space is left. You can also select a specific file or folder and go up to the select “File” then “Get Info” at the top and it will give you details about that file. You can label them different colors, which is useful when identifying which files you will be using for a specific project or need to move elsewhere on your computer.

You can also use Finder to clean up your Desktop. Simply, select all of the files and then go to “View” and “Arrange by”. Or “Clean Up Selection” will line all the files up nicely on your Desktop. You can use the Finder to empty the trash, burn files onto a disk and lots of other useful things.

Finder is necessary for your computer to function, because it is such an integral part of your computer. That is why you cannot Force Quit Finder, but only Relaunch it.
