This Week’s Word: Sync
Posted on November 22nd, 2009 No commentsThis week’s word is sync. Do you sync your data? Do you want to know how? Or, are you just curious what that means? Syncing your data is exactly what it sounds like⦠getting your data to agree on two different devices. This can be two different computers or maybe a computer and a phone. Or, you may need to sync an application you have on your computer, such as Apple Mail, and something on the internet, such as webmail. There are many ways to sync your computer.
iSync is an application which comes standard with MacOSX. You can use it to sync your computer to a mobile device, such as your phone. You can find iSync in your applications folder. Connect your phone via USB or Bluetooth to use iSync. Not all phones are supported by iSync, so check out this list to see if your phone is compatible.
If you have an iPhone or iPod, you can use iTunes to sync both devices. If you attach your iPhone or iPod, you can access your settings for syncing that device. This gives you the option to sync your music, as well as photos, calendars, contacts, etc. When you connect your iPhone or iPod, the device will come up in iTunes under “Devices”. You can click on the connect device and there will be several tabs for settings of what you would like to be synced.
MobileMe is another way to sync up different devices with your Mac. The advantage of MobileMe over other ways of syncing is that it does it without having both devices in the same physical location. It will sync up your email, contacts and calendar events. It will also sync it all up with a version that you can access on the internet, which is handy if you are away from your computer. MobileMe is great if you need your computer to always be updated when your iPhone is and you do not want to spend the time and energy to get it there by manually connecting them. Of course, the biggest disadvantage of MobileMe is the cost. It is $99/year for a single user and $149/year for a family pack. You can try it out for free for 60 days, which is great if you want to see if it is a solution that will work for you.
There is the very short on some syncing solutions and how you can get started. If you would like to get multiple computers or devices in sync, please give us a call and we would be happy to discuss what solution is right for you.
