iPad to have front facing camera after all?
Posted on February 25th, 2010 1 commentFor many who were admittedly less than impressed with the iPad, Apple’s most recent technological releases, one of the major issues that was brought to question was the lack of a camera, front-facing or otherwise. While, I personally don’t believe that the iPad needs a camera, I can understand why some who would benefit from the added functionality of the camera are unhappy with this exclusion. Well, for those of you who are in the camp that wishes the iPad had a camera there may be some good news. I haven’t heard any news set in stone, however, many writers and tech bloggers throughout the internet have began to report that both the iPad bezel has support for a camera and that new iPhone/iPad OS 3.2 has camera and video conferencing support.
Those who claim that the iPad has a bezel that is capable of housing a camera make these claims based off of some reports from Apple care providers who have received iPad parts to begin stocking up to support them. Within these parts there appears to be a spot for a camera that looks extremely similar to cut outs that already exist in MacBook models with cameras (seen on the left.) If these pictures are real and not fabricated then this could mean that Apple has either snuck a camera into their 1.0 launch or they are saving it for 2.0.To go along with the bezel, some crafty technicians have scoured the 3.2 SDK and found some instances of cameras and camera flashes in the code along with image files that appear to be sized just perfectly for iPad buttons that have video cameras on them.
Now, I have to reiterate that both of these instances are both just rumors and at this point there is no verified evidence. However, if these reports might be true it could mean that the iPhone and iPad may have video conferencing support and front facing cameras in the near future.
